The body has been recovered of a man who disappeared while swimming in the Currituck Sound on Labor Day.

Sundara Baskar Pooraswamy-Chinna, a native of India who resided in New Jersey, was recovered around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday from about eight feet of water near where he was last seen several miles north of the Wright Memorial Bridge.

“He was found using a side-scan sonar device utilized by the Hertford County and Gates County Emergency Management,” said N.C. Wildlife Law Enforcement Sgt. John Beardsley.

Currituck County Emergency Communications received a 911 call at 12:30 p.m. on Monday about a man that had jumped off of a rented pontoon boat to swim.

“He began to struggle in the water and his friends threw him a life jacket. Unable to reach the life jacket, he then fell below the water’s surface,” Beardsley said.

After an initial examination of the victim at the scene, no foul play is suspected, Beardsley said.

Currituck County Sheriff Department, Hertford County Emergency Management, Gates County Emergency Management, N.C. Marine Patrol, Crawford Township Volunteer Fire Department and N.C. Wildlife participated in the search.
