The USDA says it has identified at least some of those mystery seeds that appeared to be coming from China.
According to the most recent update from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, 14 different species of seeds have been identified. They include mustard, cabbage, morning glory, mint, sage, rosemary, lavender, hibiscus and roses.
The agency wants anyone who receives an unsolicited package of seeds to immediately contact their state plant regulatory official or Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) state plant health director.
The USDA says early evidence indicates it could be a “brushing scam” where people receive unsolicited items from a seller who then posts false customer reviews to boost sales.
