A few more windy, wet days before weekend warm-up for the Outer Banks

Sunday was windy, cold and moody off Kill Devil Hills. Like many of us right now? But tomorrow’s another day. [Kari Pugh photo]

The weather over the first weekend of spring on the Outer Banks has been cold, windy and wet. And it looks like more of that is on the way before we warm-up to close out the last full week of March.

Sunny skies, breezy winds and high temperatures around 80, and even into the mid 80s farther inland, on Thursday and Friday to close out winter and usher in spring.

The pattern then shifted with gusty onshore winds creating an angry ocean to go with sporadic rain showers through much of the day on Saturday and Sunday, along with temperatures in the mid 50s.

Seas of 6-to-8 feet, with sustained east winds of 15 to 20 mph and gusts of up to 30 knots, were reported on Sunday. Thankfully, there have been no reports of overwash at the usual troublespots on Hatteras Island.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service office at Newport/Morehead City say low pressure that has been developing along the coast through the day on Sunday will eventually lift north across eastern North Carolina.

But the unsettled weather is expected through mid-week as a series of fronts and low pressure areas cross the region, followed by unseasonably warm conditions expected this coming weekend.
