Billy Vaughn from the Kitty Hawk Kites Hang Gliding School will discuss the Wright Brothers’ early investigations, their first trip to Kitty Hawk, and the significance of the 1902 glider in the Wright’s pursuit of powered flight.

The event is scheduled for Feb. 13, with a rain date of Feb. 14, at Jockey’s Ridge State Park.

Vaughn’s presentation will include the story of how and why the brothers chose the Outer Banks and some of the natural history of the area, including the significance of the ancient barrier dunes. Jockey’s Ridge is the last example of the living dunes the Wrights utilized.

Vaughn will also talk about the Wright brothers’ addition of the integrated rudder on the ’02 glider, which directly led to the first powered flight in 1903. Opportunities may exist for visitors to climb into the cockpit of the glider, allowing them to actuate the controls. Photos will be welcome.

A 30-minute formal talk will begin at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Meet at the main dune access at the end of Visitor Center boardwalk. Click here for more details.
