Theatre of Dare Celebrates ‘Christmas in July’ with Madcap Holiday Romp

(Theatre of Dare)

When Theatre of Dare decided to make its first foray into the Outer Banks summer entertainment business this year, the main idea was to keep the productions fun and simple.

“Small cast. Comedy. Family friendly,” said TOD Business Manager Kelsey Thompson. “We wanted shows that would lighten things up for our overworked locals, and something our visitors could bring the entire beach house to.”

The result is Every Christmas Story Ever Told (And Then Some!), a three-person madcap romp through holiday traditions, stories and pop culture that will play on Wednesday nights in July at the theater in Kitty Hawk.

It all begins when the leader of the trio (Elise Rumschlag) begins to perform an earnest version of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol. However, her two cohorts (Logan Stem, Tim Hass) have other ideas. The result is 90 minutes of rapid-fire jokes, costume changes and audience participation, all based on holiday stories and traditions. Audiences can expect fractured takes on the likes of the Grinch, Rudolph, Frosty, and yes, A Christmas Carol.

“Don’t expect any hidden meanings or deep philosophical themes in this one,” says director Bert Plante. “This is three actors hamming it up and having fun, and when they have fun, the audience will have fun as well.”

And Theatre of Dare is hoping that its new, unique version of air-conditioned, family-friendly theatrical entertainment will become a new summertime Outer Banks tradition for both local fans and beachgoing visitors.

‘Every Christmas Story Ever Told (And Then Some)’ will be performed at 7:30 p.m. July 10, 17, 24,and 31. All performances will be at Theatre of Dare in Kitty Hawk, 3848 N. Croatan Highway. Tickets are $15 and available online at theatreofdareobx.com and at the door, subject to availability. The show is family-friendly, but contains a comedic debate on the existence of Santa Claus, so keep that in mind.
