The Christmas Mouse on U.S. 158 in Nags Head officially opened its new building on Friday, almost two years after a fire destroyed the popular gift shop.

The store replaces the former 8,000-square-foot building that featured nine rooms upstairs and four sections downstairs filled with Christmas trees, wreaths and other decor. On April 12, 2019, a fire gutted the building at 2401 South Croatan Highway in Nags Head.

“We’re happy to announce that our rebuilt Nags Head store is now open! We will be open from 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM. Starting March 26th, we will be open 9:00 AM – 9:00 PM. You can visit us at 2401 South Croatan Highway Nags Head, NC 27959. We look forward to seeing you soon!” the store said in a Facebook post.

Investigators determined the blaze began in an area at the back of the building used to store cardboard boxes. The cause, however, is still unknown. The store opened in 1987 and remains a tradition among families visiting the Outer Banks.

While the original building was rebuilt, the shop operated a smaller location at the Outer Banks Mall in Nags Head. That location will remain open, as well.
