An 11-year-old Currituck County girl remains hospitalized after she was struck by a vehicle on U.S. 158 Monday afternoon in front of Currituck High School in Barco.
According to Trooper N.L. Harris of the North Carolina Highway Patrol, the girl and her brother had already crossed Caratoke Highway near the northern entrance to the high school/middle school complex at approximately 3:27 p.m.
The speed limit in front of the schools is 35 mph between 2:30 and 3:30 p.m., and caution signals are located at each end of the school zone. No crosswalks or sidewalks are located on U.S. 158.
Harris said the girl went back into the roadway to retrieve an item she had dropped when she was struck by a vehicle traveling in the eastbound, outside lane.
The girl, a student at Currituck Middle School, was flown by Nightingale Regional Air Ambulance to Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters in Norfolk. An update on her condition was not available.
Trooper Harris said because the collision is still under investigation, the name of the driver and any charges that may be filed could not be released yet.
