Each Tuesday, browse our provided selection of videos and images and follow along as we showcase a variety of pets that are currently awaiting adoption at our local animal shelter.
In addition to Bullfrog the dog, this week the OBX SPCA is highlighting their newly implemented program “Working Cats” with adoptable indoor/outdoor felines Pekachu, Kitty Grease, and Harry. Verbiage is provided by shelter manager Leann Saunders:
Bullfrog
Bullfrog is about two years old and was brought into our care with a cat. Sadly their owner was going to jail and will not be released to be able to reclaim the animals. Bullfrog is full of personality and loves adventures! He makes the funniest noises and seems to be house trained!
We recently started up a program called “Working Cats” Barn to be Wild! This program is going to help us promote cats that are happier being indoor/outdoor.
At the SPCA, we know that, just like people, cats come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and personalities. While many are suited to a traditional indoor home, there are others who require different arrangements to be happy.
We’re not just talking about feral cats, though they are certainly included. We believe there is a suitable home for each of these cats, no matter what their preferences may be. It may not fit the traditional definition of “home” but at the SPCA, whatever your situation, we believe there’s a cat for that.
- Spayed/neutered and vaccinated cats
- All equipment necessary for the confinement period
- Detailed instructions on safely confining, releasing, and maintaining the barn cats. We will work with you to determine the best location for the crate.
Benefits of Having Barn/Working Cats:
- Supporting a barn/garden cat is a safe and inexpensive way to control the rodent population.
- There are no poisons for children and pets to get into and no need to set nasty traps. This environmentally friendly pest control saves you money and prevents the horses, livestock, and dogs from being accidentally poisoned.
- You will most likely enjoy watching the cats, learning their habits, and communicating with them. It can be tremendously satisfying to know you have saved their lives by giving them their much-needed home.
- Many people appreciate the cats themselves as well as the work the cats do – keeping rodents away from electrical wires, motor homes, hay, and many other things.
