Suzanne Darden Slegel, 86, formerly of Southern Shores, NC passed away on Tuesday, July 20, 2021, at Northwest Hospital in Randallstown, MD.
Born and raised in Norfolk, VA, she was the daughter of the late Mabel Tennefoss Darden and Jennings Bryan Darden. She is survived by her son, Steven Slegel and wife Karen of Sykesville, MD; her daughter, Sheryl Colleton and husband Joseph of Gainesville, VA; her grandson, Ryan Slegel and her three step-grandchildren, Hollie, Morgan, and Jake; and her sister, Mary Virginia Robbins of Smyrna, TN. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband and best friend, Raymond Charles Slegel.
Suzanne cherished her grandson Ryan as they shared a special bond. Her great sense of humor lead to her ability to talk endlessly with everyone, including complete strangers, and she always made new friends. For over 70 years, she maintained an English pen pal from World War II.
Having visited the Outer Banks since she was a small child, Suzanne and her husband Ray retired to the area permanently in 1992, having moved from Columbia, Maryland. She, along with her husband, enjoyed boating, was a member of Duck Woods Country Club, and was a devoted member of Duck United Methodist Church, where she was active in the United Methodist Women and sang in the Choir. Suzanne and her “bridge-buddies” could be found weekly at the Country Club. She was also very instrumental and active in the Network for Endangered Sea Turtles (N.E.S.T.).
