A strong line of thunderstorms moving across the Outer Banks early Friday afternoon is spinning waterspouts on the Currituck, Albemarle and Pamlico sounds.
Doppler radar showed a thunderstorm producing waterspouts just before 12:30 p.m. near Jarvisburg and Grandy, the National Weather Service Wakefield forecast office said.
Several people captured the over-water twister on camera.
The weather service also reported water spouts spotted on the Pamlico Sound in the Swan Quarter area about 1:20 p.m. and on the Albemarle Sound near the Duck Coe Pier to near East Lake.
The weather service warns waterspouts can easily overturn boats and create locally hazardous water conditions.
The weather system bringing the rain is unrelated to Hurricane Henri, which is moving offshore and bringing high surf and deadly rip currents to the Outer Banks.
