According to the National Weather Service Newport/Morehead City, an unusually strong cold front will impact the Eastern United States on Tuesday, January 9, and Wednesday, January 10, of next week, bringing the potential for several significant impacts to Eastern NC.

Coastal Impacts include powerful southerly swell, strong winds, and elevated water levels could produce significant overwash and coastal flooding, especially along the immediate coast south of Cape Hatteras, and along the north and west shores of the Pamlico Sound and nearby tributaries. Strong storms and flooding are also to be expected. The NOAA says the exact strength of the winds ahead of the front will largely determine the extent of coastal impacts.

Conditions begin to deteriorate Tuesday morning, with the strongest winds and heaviest rain expected Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday morning.
