There’s a good possibility that a new brewery will be coming to Kill Devil Hills. It’s not going to happen right away. In fact, it will probably take at least a year and probably longer than that.
The first hurdle for Swell Brewery has been crossed though as the KDH Planning Board approved the initial plans for the brewery.
According to reports from local sources, the new brewery will have 30 parking spaces, an outdoor dining and activity area, and a tasting room.
If the plans do move forward, Swell Brewery will be the sixth microbrewery to open on the Outer Banks. Sixth if Weeping Radish in Jarvisburg is included.
The Breweries and the Possibilities
The five local breweries that are open now are 1718 Brewing down on Ocracoke, Lost Colony Brewing in Manteo, the Outer Banks Brewing Station in Kill Devil Hills, Northern Outer Banks Brewing Company in Corolla and Weeping Radish in Jarvisburg.
If Swell Brewery does manage to get through the site plan process and build their brewery—which they probably will—the possibility of a beer tasting tour of the northern Outer Banks becomes a very real possibility.
The styles of the local beers are different enough that it would make for a very interesting tour.
Ocracoke’s 1718 Brewery is a bit far away to be included in a tasting tour, but the other five are close enough together that it could be done.
The location of Swell Brewery will be 1802 S. Virginia Dare Trail. That’s the Beach Road. Right now it’s just an empty lot with Island Dye It Yourself on the north end of the lot.
We haven’t gotten any information to date on the kind of beer Swell Beer will be brewing.
