On May 31, 2023, Shirley Valentine Barcroft Cahoon received her wings and went to walk with the angels and her beloved “Babe.” She was born in Virginia Beach, VA on August 4, 1936. She was 86 years old.
Daughter of the late Fred V. Barcroft and Lillie Hewitt Barcroft, Shirley was the oldest of a set of twins born into a family of four brothers and four sisters.
Shirley and her husband Fowler “Miller” Cahoon celebrated 46 years of marriage prior to his passing.
She is survived by two sisters, Elizabeth Tolson of Virginia Beach, VA and Beverly Weaver (her twin) of Mt. Sterling, OH. Also, surviving are her eight children, Pamela Sue Gibbs of Engelhard, NC, Eddie Bateman (Crystal) of Manns Harbor, NC, Fowler Miller “Ben” Cahoon, Jr. (Paula) of Kill Devil Hills, NC, Nancy Cahoon of East Lake, NC, Kimberly Tyler of East Lake, NC, Laura Cahoon Daniels of Manteo, NC, Amy Martinez of Manteo, NC, and Emily Cruz of Columbia, NC; thirteen grandchildren, Cheryl Weston (Larry), Beth Moore, Katie Overton (Jason), Lindsey Pridgeon (Charles), Summer Cahoon (Chad), Taylor Cahoon, Nathaniel Cahoon, Whitney Horne (Brian), Ryan Tyler (Cassie), Bevin Schlacthe (Shane), Cathryn Daniels, Javier Cahoon (Courtney), and Luis Tenorio; and fifteen great-grandchildren.
Shirley lived a long life filled with many friends and acquaintances that she met along her journey. She was lovingly known as the little lady in the white hat.
A graveside funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, June 6, 2023, in the East Lake Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, Lake Neighborhood Road, East Lake, NC 27953. The family will receive friends and relatives for a visitation Monday evening from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm at Twiford Colony Chapel, Budleigh Street, Manteo, NC 27954.
