The Dare County Sheriff’s Office on Saturday evening reported ocean overwash covering both sides of N.C. 12 coming into Hatteras village, and flowing across the road in Buxton “at a high rate of speed.”

As of 8:30 p.m., the only main road on Hatteras Island was still passable, the sheriff’s office said. The rushing water was reported near the Cape Hatteras Motel in Buxton.
