Scattered to numerous thunderstorms, some strong to severe, will impact much of eastern North Carolina—especially west of Highway 17—on Friday, May 27, according to a recent update from the National Weather Service (NOAA).
Per this morning’s update from the NOAA office in Newport/Morehead City, the risk of large hail appears lower. Additionally, the timing of strong to potentially severe thunderstorms now appears to stretch from mid-morning through tonight, with a couple of rounds of thunderstorms forecast.
The primary threats will be damaging winds (55-65 mph), lightning, minor flooding, and an extremely high risk for rip currents along our beaches.
