The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for most of eastern North Carolina, including Dare and Currituck counties, through 11 p.m. Friday.
Storms were moving in Friday afternoon, with the possibility of frequent lightning, heavy rain, high winds and large hail the main threats.
In a Facebook Live video, forecasters at the National Weather Service Newport/Morehead said this May is shaping up to be one of the driest on record for the area, so the rain is much needed.
Heavy downpours expected with today’s storm could bring an inch to inch and a half of rain.
