NCDOT NC 12 took to social media Monday to announce that the Ocracoke sandbag replacement project is officially underway.
Over the next month or so, contractors will be replacing about 800 large sandbags that were damaged or displaced during the course of winter. When complete, the sandbags will establish a protective barrier between the ocean and the highway.
NCDOT notes that single lane closures will be in effect while the work progresses and to proceed with caution, slowing down and giving them room to work.
