Contractors for the N.C. Department of Transportation have begun the second phase of a project that includes milling and resurfacing the roadway on South Croatan Highway, and adjoining side streets, between East Gray Eagle Street and the Melvin Daniels Bridge. This area is known locally as Whalebone Junction.
The first phase of the project, which is complete, involved replacing a pipe culvert under the highway, and two crossline pipes at the intersection of Cape Hatteras National Park Road and South Virginia Dare Trail.
During the project’s current phase, single lane closures will be in place where the resurfacing work is taking place.
All work is expected to be complete by mid-November, weather permitting.
Motorists are advised to use caution, follow all posted signs and signals, and adhere to detour routes.
