Richard “Dickie” Carlton Humphries

Elizabeth City, NC

Richard “Dickie” Carlton Humphries, 79, born on February 21, 1945, transitioned from our presence to his eternal home on Saturday, May 11, 2024. He was a native of Elizabeth City, NC.  Richard served his country in the U.S. Navy, aboard the USS Chicago CG 11, during the Vietnam War.  Following his tour of duty, he returned to Elizabeth City, where he was employed by the Norfolk Naval Shipyard and retired after 30 years. Following his retirement from the Shipyard, Richard, a jack of all trades, always on call, was known as “the go to guy”, where he was always willing to lend a helping hand to family and friends.

Richard is survived by his wife of 54 years, Mary Lynn Lewis Humphries. In addition, cherishing his memory, he leaves his daughter, Dorinda Lynne Humphries Rice, and his son-in-law James (Jim) Rice of Pinehurst, NC. He is also loved and cherished by his grandson, Ryan Rice, and his granddaughter, Rachel Rice, whom he held dearly in his heart even before they were born. Richard is also survived by many cousins, whom he loved as brothers and sisters.

Richard was predeceased by his parents, and his beloved grandmother, Annie Mae Jackson Chesson, as well as, numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins, each having a profound influence on his life.

Richard never knew a stranger and will always be remembered by his many acts of kindness. The Greek philosopher and fable writer, Aesop, is quoted as saying, “No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.”  Richard lived with this conviction and requested that to honor his legacy, you do an act of kindness for someone, because it may be the very thing that changes their life, as well as yours.

The family will gather for a time of fellowship and reflection to celebrate a life well-lived at Twiford Funeral Home, Church St. from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 16, 2024, followed by military rites honoring Richard’s love of our Country in the Sam A. Twiford Veteran’s Park, located at Twiford Funeral Home at 3:00 p.m.   At other times, the family will receive friends and relatives at their residence.
