The N.C. Highway Patrol has released the identity of the motorcyclist killed in a crash Wednesday afternoon on N.C. 168 in Moyock as 51-year-old Scott D. Drew, a former Navy chief petty officer.
Drew, who lived in Moyock, was on his motorcycle stopped at the light at the Moyock Commons Shopping Center when a sport-utility vehicle slammed into his bike and a pickup truck stopped in front of him, North Carolina Highway Patrol reported.
The SUV and motorcycle burst into flames.
Drew died at the scene. The SUV driver, 69-year-old Samuel Soloman of Moyock was flown to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with serious, non-life threatening injuries.
The driver of the pickup suffered minor injuries, according to Currituck Fire and EMS Chief Ralph “Chip” Melton.
Soloman has so far been charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle, and additional charges are pending the outcome of the Highway Patrol’s investigation.
In an obituary from Gallop Funeral Services, family members said Drew retired from the Navy and embarked on a second career as a government civilian “to continue supporting the Navy he loved so much.”
“Scott was passionate about everything and so full of life,” the obituary reads. “He always had a smile for everyone and loved making friends.”
Drew, who leaves behind a wife and son, loved photography, music, tattoos, Jeeps and high-end tequila.
“He was also a super-nerd who loved sci-fi, Marvel and DC. If you knew him, we’re sure you’ve had conversations with him on one or more of these topics …” the obituary reads.
A memorial gathering to celebrate Drew’s life will be held April 27 at the Eagle Creek Bar & Grill Reception Hall in Moyock at 2 p.m.
