Republicans sweep Dare County Board of Education; chair loses seat

Four seats on the Dare County Board of Education were on the 2020 ballot, with three incumbents filing to run again. One of them, board chair Bea Basnight, lost her seat Tuesday night in a GOP sweep.

Basnight of Manteo, a Democrat who represents District 1, lost to challenger by Republican Carl Woody, II, also from Manteo, 51.93% to 48.07%.

At-Large member David Twiddy, a Republican from Manteo, won the race 66.22% to Democratic challenger Charles Parker’s 37.78%.

In the District 2 seat, Republican Susan Bothwell of Nags Head won the race 55.68% to Democratic challenger Jen Alexander’s 44.32%.

Mary Ellon Ballance of Hatteras, a Republican representing District 4, was unopposed.
