There’s a moderate rip current risk at the beaches of Duck, Southern Shores, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, Nags Head, Pea Island, Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo, Avon, and Buxton today due to swells from distant Hurricane Larry.
In Kill Devil Hills, ocean rescue is flying red flags, meaning no ocean swimming is allowed at this time.
For the rest of the Outer Banks north of Buxton, only experienced surf swimmers who know how to escape a rip current should enter the water. Never swim alone and always take flotation!
There is a low rip current risk south of Cape Hatteras including Frisco, Hatteras Village and Ocracoke. While the risk for rip currents is low, life-threatening rip currents may still be present. Remember LOW risk does not mean NO risk!
Strongest rip currents often occur a couple hours either side of low tide, which occurs at 1115 am today.
