Prescribed burn scheduled for today at Jockey’s Ridge

Don’t be alarmed if you see smoke near Jockey’s Ridge today, as there is a prescribed burn being conducted along the Roanoke Sound shoreline in the state park in Nags Head.

The Soundside Access will be closed today while park personnel and N.C. Forest Service conduct a burn of about 20 acres to open up the understory of the forested area.

Warning signs have been placed along the side of the road in the vicinity of the prescribed burn area. Drifting smoke is possible. Motorists are advised to use headlights and proceed with caution when driving through drifting smoke, especially along West Soundside Road

Local fire department, police, and emergency management are aware of today’s prescribed burn. So if you see smoke in the vicinity of Jockey’s Ridge, please do not report it.
