The first phase of the demolition of a building at College of The Albemarle’s Dare County Campus located at 205 U.S. Highway 64 in Manteo began at 9 a.m. on Monday.
The building, which was formerly Manteo High School and later Manteo Middle School before becoming part of COA, is being demolished in order to clear the site for construction of a two-story, state-of-the-art academic building that will take its place.
Demolition began with the former auditorium, which is located on the south side of the building.
Several Dare County officials were on site to watch as the demolition began, including Board of Commissioner Chairman Bob Woodard, Commissioner Danny Couch, County Manager Bobby Outten and Finance Director David Clawson.
Potential souvenir-seekers are reminded that it is an active construction zone, and that fences have been erected around the site.
Dare County will reuse the brick and concrete masonry units from the building to construct roads at the Dare County C&D Landfill in Manns Harbor, an action that resulted in considerable cost savings on the demolition process.
The demolition process will take approximately two months to complete. Construction of the new facility is expected to be completed in February 2022.
When construction of the new academic building is complete, all offices, programs and services currently operating out of COA’s campus on Russell Twiford Road in Manteo will be relocated to the new site.
