Local photographer and Outer Banks Mom blogger Audra Krieg recently joined up with other photographers to launch “The Front Steps Project,” an effort to raise money for the Beach Food Pantry — and offer families a unique and happy memory of this strange time in history.

Krieg shared a story on social media about a Boston photographer taking front porch photos using the hashtag #thefrontstepsproject. That post sparked interest from other local photographers and hundreds of Outer Banks families.

After shooting portraits this week, Krieg wrote on Facebook:

I was able to be a part of a wonderful project called The Front Steps Project along side multiple other local photographers. First and foremost, we’ve raised over $1000 for Beach Food Pantry so far. Thank you! We would love to watch that number keep growing! I have a few more 5 minute sessions left to shoot this week before I wrap this up as our first local COVID-19 case has been announced. I was outdoors, MORE than 6 feet at all times and shot with my long lens. This project captures where we are today in a scary and stressful time but it also captures a time in our lives when our “island” was closed and we all stayed home to protect ourselves and to protect others.

Krieg’s photography company, 12th Street Portraits, teamed up with Whitney Norko Photography, Erin Lundy Photography, Sarah D’Ambra Photography, Tiffani Marie Photography and Kati Wilkins Photography. Several others have joined since.

Keeping a safe distance, the photographers grabbed photos of families on their front porches. Some are funny, some a bit more formal. But all are a bright spot to look back on when this is over.

The effort has so far raised about $1,200 for the Beach Food Pantry. Donations are still being accepted, and can be made directly to the pantry here.
