PHOTO: Coastal Wildlife Refuge Society reminds public to watch for bears as they explore local refuges

[Beverly Meekins]

On Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge, bears are active. It’s a good time to remind yourself to be careful when you drive the refuge both for your safety and for the wildlife too. You never know what will be in the road.

When observing wildlife, be sure and stay far enough away that wildlife doesn’t pose a threat to you and that you don’t alter their behavior.

Photos like the one above captured by Beverly Meekins of a black bear standing in the road makes it look like the photographer was near the bear, but great lenses and cameras allowed for this interesting picture being taken from a long, safe distance away.
