Two homes on opposite ends of Southern Shores were heavily damaged by fire early Sunday morning.
Firefighters from Southern Shores, Duck, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, Colington, Corolla and Lower Currituck were involved in battling both fires.
Firefighters were called to the first blaze, at 103 High Dune Loop on the south end of town, at 2:17 a.m. The fire appears to have been caused by a grill next to the home. The house sustained heavy damage, according to a Southern Shores Volunteer Fire Department news release.
The other fire, at 303 Duck Road/N.C. 12, erupted a short time later and left the home a total loss. That blaze started in an detached garage and spread to the home, the fire department said.
The occupants of both home were able to escape and there were no injuries.
Crews were dispatched again to one of the fire scenes around 8:30 a.m. Sunday due to a flare up.
No injuries were reported.
