ATTENTION: “Old” Oregon Inlet Life-Saving/Coast Guard Station Members
Did you, any relatives, or family members forebearers serve in this station? It is the one on the south side of the inlet, or the northern tip of Hatteras (Pea) Island.
It was a United States Life-Saving Service station from 1898 until 1915 and then a United States Coast Guard Motor Lifeboat Station from 1915 all the way until 1988. That year it was abandoned and the current USCG MLB Station was built on the north side of Oregon Inlet. The 1898 building has been abandoned since 1988!
The 501 (c) (3) nonprofit Outer Banks Coast Guard History Preservation Group has been formed to save this part of Heroic Historic Hatteras History. Part of the building will be a museum. We want to preserve and honor the men and women there as well as the structure.
Send us the name(s), rank, and years to LifeSavingServiceOBX@gmail.com. Also, any photographs and stories you wish to share. This is a free and honorable service.
Finally, if there is any way you can or want to help or donate or be put on our emailing list, please let us know that.
