A Nags Head woman was killed and three people were hurt Wednesday afternoon in a three vehicle crash on U.S. 158 north of Grandy.

The N.C. Highway Patrol said the wreck happened approximately 2:48 p.m. in the 6200 block of Caratoke Highway between Barnard Road and Dot Sears Drive.

A car traveling eastbound and driven by Arakaki Joni Love, 60, crossed the five-lane highway and collided head-on with a westbound pickup truck. Another car traveling westbound was also involved.

Love died at the scene. The driver and a passenger in the truck, both 75 and from Currituck, were flown to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with serious injuries. The passenger was released Wednesday night, while the driver remained hospitalized overnight.

The driver of the third vehicle that was sideswiped by Love’s vehicle and came to rest in the ditch alongside the roadway which was following several car lengths back, a pregnant woman from Kitty Hawk, was taken to The Outer Banks Hospital for observation.

Due to the circumstances of the crash, the Highway Patrol said no charges will be filed.
