A seven-year-old boy from Ohio died in an accident involving an elevator at a vacation rental home in Corolla over the weekend.
Currituck Fire-EMS and Corolla Fire and Rescue were dispatched Sunday at 7:40 p.m. to the 1100 block of Franklyn Street in the Corolla Light neighborhood, according to Currituck Fire-EMS Chief Ralph Melton.
Emergency responders arrived moments later to find a the child without a pulse and still entrapped by the elevator.
“Rescuers were able to quickly free the entrapped child but extensive efforts to resuscitate him were not successful and he ultimately died of his injuries,” Melton said.
Melton added that the boy was from Canton, Ohio. No other details about the accident were released.
While the N.C. Department of Labor is responsible for inspections of elevators in commercial and public buildings, the department does not have the statutory authority to inspect private residence elevators, according to NCDOL Communications Director Jennifer Haigwood.
“If an accident happened in or around a private residence elevator, there is no requirement to report that accident to us,” Haigwood said.
