The OBX TowneBank Marathon and Half Marathon is set to take place on Veteran’s Weekend, November 11 – 13, 2022.  This year’s races on Saturday and on Sunday will be run entirely in Nags Head, Kill Devil Hills and Kitty Hawk with all events ending at the Wright Brothers Memorial.

The weekend kicks off Friday afternoon & evening with registration taking place at The Ramada Inn on the Beach Road in Nags Head.  Saturday runs, sponsored by Surf Peds Foundation, Surf Pediatrics & Family Medicine, and Surf Urgent Care, include an 8K, 5K and the very popular Family Fun Run.    Registration for all three Saturday events is needed and can be done online (obxse.org).   Everything for these three running events takes place on and around the Wright Brothers Memorial starting at 7:30 am.  Parking for these events is conveniently located at the First Flight Schools that are directly across the street.

This year’s Saturday theme is ‘Living Swell & Soar’ in an effort to nudge everyone in the community to live a healthy lifestyle all the while benefitting a non-profit.  All Fun Run athletes under 18 will be recognized for helping Surf Pediatrics & Medicine make a $5,000 donation to Beach Food Pantry.  And the male and female first place winners in the 8K and 5K will have a donation made in their name to their favorite charity by Surf Peds Foundation.

Sunday is the OBX TowneBank Marathon and Half Marathon which starts at 7:00 am at the Nags Head Outlet Mall.  The course route is shown on the photo.  It takes runners south to north this year with both events ending up at the Wright Brothers Memorial, giving runners an entirely different experience.  Runners will get to run on the Sound; in front of Jockey’s Ridge; thru the woods behind the YMCA; around First Flight Middle School with the Half Marathon runners ending with a lap around the bottom of the Wright Brothers Memorial.  Full Marathoners will continue north on Bay Drive to Kitty Hawk and then back to the Memorial.

A group out of Colorado, the 50 States Half Marathon Club, is making the OBX Race their North Carolina Half Marathon event with some 250 runners coming from all across the US to participate.  For the entire OBX Marathon weekend there are expected of up to 2,000 runners participating.

And with this weekend comes a major need for volunteers to help make our visitors and locals have a fun time at either day events.  The Outer Banks community has always generously showed up to help with registration, water stops along the route, and finishline flourish.  This year is no exception.  Volunteers have easily signed up at: https://www.signup.com/go/oZXBFGv and the event can always use more hands to make it happen.

To see the schedule of events or to register to run for either day or to volunteer, go to www.obxse.org and navigate to the 2022 OBX Marathon and the various links that are already set up.  Runners.  Walkers.  Joggers.  All are invited to challenge themselves on this Veteran’s Weekend Classic Outer Banks event.  The Outer Banks Visitors Bureau always most generously helps to make this weekend of race events happen. Please join us.
