Big fish, a big fire, tragic accidents, fake news and new records were among the top stories of 2021 on the Outer Banks. As 2021 comes to an end, we’re looking back at the most-read stories at OBXToday.com.

Fire destroyed a large vacation home in Kill Devil Hills in the early morning hours of June 20, spreading to other buildings and cars and forcing the evacuation of some nearby condos and houses.

No one was hurt in the blaze, which engulfed the 18-bedroom oceanfront home at 2031 S. Virginia Dare Trail and spread to homes on both sides, the pool house at the TownePlace Suites pool and destroyed several cars.

“There were a number of investigators who came to try to determine the origin and cause from the different insurance companies,” said Kill Devil Hills Fire Marshal John Risoldi. “The fire was deemed to be undetermined at this time.”

All the structures involved have been demolished, and construction has already started on the hotel’s new pool house.
