Outer Banks Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 16-07 recently capped off its successful Guardian Open Golf Tournament by presenting a $13,200 donation check to Coast Guard Mutual Assistance (CGMA).

CGMA is the official non-profit relief society of the Coast Guard, working closely with local Coast Guard commands to promote the financial stability and the general well-being of Coast Guard people through interest-free loans, grants, and financial counseling.  All of the money donated to CGMA is for use in the local Coast Guard Auxiliary District.

CGMA Chief Development Officer, Alena Howard, who was on hand to accept the check from Fifth District (Southern Region) Commodore Allen W. Fredd, Jr. and Flotilla Commander Jack Horst said, “CGMA is here to provide support to Coast Guard families who are in financial and other need.  Because CGMA works mainly through providing financial assistance in the form of loans, this type of donation will go a very long way to supporting needy families, especially as housing and living expenses continue to rise.”  Commander Jack Horst reminded the Flotilla that CGMA provided essential support and financial assistance to Coast Guard families displaced after a 2020 fire in Buxton. He said, “CGMA is there when Coast Guard people need it most, and we are proud of our sponsors and Auxiliarists who did so much work to make this event successful and help support local Coast Guard personnel.”

The Guardian Open, held at the Sea Scape Golf Links in Kitty Hawk, hosted over 120 golfers, and involved local and national sponsors including the title sponsor, TowneBank, which made a generous $5,000 donation to CGMA, as well as primary sponsors including City Beverage, Fairlead Inc., Marine Sonic Technology, Hampton Rubber Co. and Dunkin’ Donuts.  Over half of the players in the tournament were from local Coast Guard commands with the other teams made up of a diverse mix of local OBX residents, weekend teams and Flotilla members.  Information about the Coast Guard Guardian Tournament for next September will soon be posted on the Flotilla web site, easily located by searching for CGAUX 1607.
