John Peter Figura

John P. (Jack) Figura passed away June 21 in Virginia Beach, VA after a long battle with Agent Orange related illnesses. Jack was born in Pittsburgh, PA to the late John Frank and Mary Rose (Maderic) Figura.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters Rosemary Symsek, Jean Pachel, Fidelis Catalde, Mary Jane Sanchez, and by an infant brother, John F. Figura. Jack is survived by three children, Rachelle Figura (Steve Bay) of Kill Devil Hills, NC, Jennifer Kopp (Sean) of Brockway, PA, and John P. Figura II (Kira Arnt) of Coinjock, NC. Jack loved nothing more than spending time with his grandchildren, Nicole (Robert) Walsh, Derrick (Grace) Polohonki, Alexandra Kopp (Brian Kane) and Erin Kopp. Jack’s faithful companions Sushi and Winter have been taken in and cared for by family friends.

Jack enlisted in the Marine Corp at the age of 17, and proudly served his country in Vietnam, where he earned the Presidential Unit Commendation, Navy Unit Commendation, Combat Action Medal, Vietnam Service Medal (with 4 bronze stars), Vietnam Campaign Medal, National Defense Medal, and Good Conduct Medal.

He resided in Currituck County, NC for many years, where he worked in real estate. He was active in local youth soccer leagues, and he coached for many years. He was known for his generosity and for his love of sports, especially the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Jack chose to be cremated and a memorial was held at The American Legion Post 288 in Coinjock, NC on Saturday July 13, 2019 at 9:30 AM.

Arrangements have been made in cooperation with Gallop Funeral Services. In lieu of flowers, it is asked that donations be made to Vietnam Veterans of America or the Wounded Warrior Project.
