Irvin Carl Johnson, Sr.

Irvin Carl Johnson Sr., 91, of Avon, NC passed away on February 27, 2020. He was born April 21, 1928, in Augusta, GA, son of late Eli and Lillian Johnson and spent most of his life in Portsmouth, VA.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife Rita McKay Johnson, his oldest son Carl Johnson Jr., and five siblings; John Thomas “JT” Johnson, Hanford Johnson, David Johnson, Juanita Clark, and Cleve Johnson. He is survived by his son Charles Michael Johnson (Linda), four grandchildren Carl Johnson III, Laura Johnson Michael (Scott), Charles Michael Johnson, Jr. (Rita), Nathan Lee Corday (Shana), his sister Evelyn Sellers of Jacksonville, FL, many great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews, whom he all loved and adored so very much.

Carl served in the US Navy for 20 years, retiring as a Chief Commissaryman. He was an active member of his church and after retiring from the US Navy, he became a firefighter. He spent many years during his retirement working on cars and rebuilding engines. As a dad, he taught the value of family. As a grandfather and great-grandfather, “Big Dad” was known for his wonderful stories, building forts and scooters, delicious meals, big hugs, and his unconditional love. He loved watching westerns, enjoyed his sweets and relaxing on his porch swing while soaking up the sun overlooking the sound. His presence, smile, and witty humor will be sadly missed by his family and friends.

A gathering to celebrate Carl’s life will be held at 11:00 am, March 13, 2020 at West Park Church of Christ, Portsmouth, VA. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the church in his memory.
