George William Stimmel

On February 22, 2020, the world lost a devoted father, grandfather, husband, educator, coach, advisor, and friend. George William Stimmel of Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina (formerly of Cumberland, Maryland) died peacefully after a long difficult struggle with Alzheimer’s disease and cancer.

Born in Cumberland, Maryland, April 19, 1939, he was the son of the late George Richard Stimmel I and June Ilda (VanHorn) Stimmel.

George was a graduate of Fort Hill High School’s class of 1957. Upon graduation, he joined the US Army reserves and was stationed at both Fort Knox and Fort Holabird. He received his Bachelor of Science from Fairmont State Teacher’s College where he was a member of the TKE fraternity and the 1959 West Virginia intercollegiate championship football team. While at Fairmont State he met and married his wife of 57 years, Beverly Ann Bryan. George was a science teacher and coach at Allegany High School from 1962-1995. Well known for his community involvement, George was a leader for Cub Scouts, Webelos, Oldtown Lions Club, Davis Memorial United Methodist Church, and local government.

Surviving are his widow Beverly Ann Bryan Stimmel, Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina; one daughter Stacey Lynn (Stimmel) Devine and husband Michael William Devine, Sr., Eldersburg, Maryland; two sons, George Richard (Rick) Stimmel and his wife Alice Stendeback, Cumberland, Maryland, Robert Bryan Stimmel and his spouse Christopher Michael Schisler, Ellicott City, Maryland; three sisters Carol (Stimmel) Cooper, Vermilion, Ohio, Carla (Stimmel) Malloy, and Darla Stimmel, both of Eckhart Mines, Maryland; four grandchildren, Michael William Devine Jr., Lucas Benjamin Devine, Delaney Elizabeth Devine, Abigail Catherine Devine, and three step-grandchildren, Hanna Stendeback, Victoria Stendeback, and Samuel Hunter Stendeback. Many nieces and nephews; and his treasured old English bulldog, Tori, will also miss him.

A celebration of his life will be held in Cumberland near to the date of what would’ve been George’s 81st birthday in April. Details for the event will be published through the Cumberland Times News and on social media.
