Barbara Ann Nickerson

Barbara Ann (Aylward) Nickerson, 64, of Harbinger, NC died Tuesday, July 14, 2020, at her home surrounded by her loved ones.

Barbara was born on January 29, 1956 to the late Thomas J. and Phyllis T. (Cunningham) Aylward. She grew up in Melrose, MA as the third of eleven children.

Barbara served her country honorably in the United States Navy for 12 years stationed in Hawaii, Egypt, Philadelphia, and New York. She worked for 20 years as a media assistant in the library for the Chesapeake, VA elementary schools. Barbara experienced great joy teaching and caring for the children.

Barbara was a dedicated and faithful parishioner of Holy Redeemer by the Sea Catholic Church in Kitty Hawk, NC where she was the Religious Education Coordinator and a Eucharistic Minister.

Barbara’s favorite place was at the seashore no matter where she lived. Barbara had an infectious sense of humor and shared it with all who were fortunate enough to cross her path. Above all, Barbara cherished time spent with her family near and far.

Barbara is survived by her devoted husband of 28 years, Jay Nickerson; son, Patrick Nickerson (Rachel); and granddaughter, Eden Grace. Also, surviving are three sisters, Joanne Miller (Russell), Jeanne Aylward, and Christina Tiernan (Sean); five brothers, Stephen Aylward (Marion), Peter Aylward (Sandra), Paul Aylward, Michael Aylward, Phillip Aylward (Giselle); and a brother-in-law, Kevin Keohan.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Keohan and Patricia Ralston.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, July 24, 2020 at Holy Redeemer by the Sea Catholic Church, 301 West Kitty Hawk Road, Kitty Hawk, NC, officiated by Rev. Dr. William F. Walsh, osfs. Viewing will be in the church starting at 10:00 a.m. prior to the Mass of Resurrection.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent in Barbara’s honor to Creative Choices Pregnancy Resource Center, 4711 S Croatan Highway #2, Nags Head NC 27959.
