The N.C. Department of Transportation has blocked access to the fishing catwalks along the Melvin Daniels Bridge on the U.S. 64 causeway in Nags Head after reports of social distancing guidelines not being followed.
“We’ve been receiving calls regarding the large number of people fishing from the catwalks and we contacted DOT yesterday about it and they decided to close the catwalks,” said Town of Nags Head public information officer Roberta Thuman.
Commonly referred to as the Little Bridge, the four-lane span crosses part of the Roanoke Sound and is popular with anglers targeting a variety of bottom fish, especially speckled trout.
While many other North Carolina communities have closed all of their beaches to use to prevent people from gathering, the over 100 miles of beaches from Carova to Ocracoke remain open for now.
