A damage assessment by the National Weather Service has confirmed that tree and minor roof damage in Corolla was caused by a weak tornado spawned by severe thunderstorms on Sunday.
Multiple tornado warnings were issued with the storms between 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. in the region as National Weather Service radar indicated possible rotation happening within the strongest thunderstorms.
A waterspout was reported in the Currituck Sound about one mile east of Waterlily around 12 p.m., while a trained spotter reported a wall cloud over the Currituck Sound at 12:12 p.m.
According to a report from the weather office in Wakefield, Virginia, the EF-0 tornado with winds of 70 to 80 mph traveled about 6/10ths of a mile and was 100 yards wide.
The twister touched down along the Currituck Sound adjacent to The Currituck Club golf course at 12:14 p.m., tracked south-southeast along the seventh and eighth holes where it uprooted large trees and snapped numerous limbs.
The tornado lifted shortly before crossing the intersection of Hunt Club Drive and Trumpeter Swan Court just before 12:18 p.m., but not before it knocked down down several large trees and ripped some shingles off a house on Trumpeter Swan Court.
The frontal boundary that spawned Sunday’s severe weather has since become hung up over eastern North Carolina, and is responsible for the heavy rains forecast to bring up to 10 inches of precipitation and the risk of flash flooding into the weekend.
