North Carolina is opening COVID-19 vaccines to “Group 4” a week earlier than planned. Gov. Roy Cooper on Thursday said vaccinations can begin for those in the group March 17.

Group 4 includes people with high-risk medical conditions and a wide variety of essential workers, including retail and hotel workers, utility workers, financial services employees, people experiencing homelessness, and incarcerated people who have not been vaccinated. North Carolina is one of 13 states that hasn’t yet started immunizing people with pre-existing conditions, but officials say the growing supply of vaccines makes it possible to include more people on the priority list, WRAL reported Thursday.

Those with medical conditions will take priority among Group 4, with the remainder expected to follow the first week of April.

Dare County began accepting registrations for Group 4 individuals earlier this week. And Hyde County is accepting registrations from anyone who would like to receive a COVID-19 vaccine.
