N.C. Highway 12 Closed from Marc Basnight Bridge to Rodanthe Due to Overwash

The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) has announced that N.C. Highway 12 is currently closed from the Marc Basnight Bridge to Rodanthe due to ocean overwash that occurred overnight. A Coastal Flood Warning remains in effect from Duck to Buxton through Thursday morning, May 12, 2022.

Overwash along portions of N.C. Highway 12—particularly on Hatteras Island—may continue to occur through at least Wednesday evening, May 11, 2022, according to the National Weather Service at Newport/Morehead City.

Ocean overwash is most likely to occur within several hours of high tide, and flooding could become progressively more impactful with each high tide cycle for the next several days. Motorists should avoid travel on N.C. Highway 12 on Hatteras Island. If travel is necessary, proceed with extreme caution and give way to road crews working to clear hazards.

As travel plans are made, keep in mind that ocean water, sand and debris can easily damage a vehicle and that other hazards—including significant road damage—may be hidden by flood waters.
