Multiple drug-related arrests made at Outer Banks entry checkpoints

The Dare County Sheriff’s Office arrested four people last week on drug-related charges during a pair of separate incidents at the county’s entry checkpoints.

According to a news release, three people were in a vehicle that approached the Manns Harbor checkpoint on Friday, April 24, at approximately 7:38 p.m.

A Dare County Sheriff’s Office Deputy with the B-District observed the vehicle stop along U.S. 64 prior to reaching the checkpoint, and a passenger change seats with the driver.

While the deputy was checking into the occupants driver’s license status, a Nags Head Police Department K-9 unit arrived to assist and the police dog alerted to the presence of controlled substances within the vehicle.

The sheriff’s office said a subsequent search turned up numerous amounts of drugs.

Tammy Peaks Mills, 49, of Williamston was arrested on felony charges of possession of a Schedule II controlled substance, and possession with intent to manufacture, sell or distribute a Schedule IV controlled substance, along with six misdemeanor drug counts.

Mills was released from the Dare County Detention Center after posting $11,000 secured bond.

Kaye Bonds Rogerson, 50, of Williamston, two misdemeanor drug-related charges, and released after posting $5,500 secured bond.

A third passenger was ticketed for transporting unsealed liquor in the passenger area of a motor vehicle. She was released from the scene and turned around at the checkpoint.

On Thursday, April 23, around 1 a.m. at the checkpoint at the Wright Memorial Bridge in Kitty Hawk, a vehicle from Virginia with four people inside approached the checkpoint and the driver was asked for identification by an A-District deputy.

When the driver could not produce a valid license, they were asked to pull to the side of U.S. 158.

A Nags Head Police Department K-9 alerted on the possible presence of a controlled substance in the vehicle, and a subsequent search turned numerous amounts of heroin and meth.

Curtis Matthew Young, 35, of Suffolk was charged with felony possession of heroin and felony possession of methamphetamine. He was released from the Dare County Detention Center after posting a $5,000 secured bond.

Robert James Perry, Jr., 31, of Virginia Beach was charged with a misdemeanor drug-related charge.

Authorities also turned up warrants for failing to appear on charges of driving while license revoked and failure to wear a seat belt against Perry outside Dare County. He was released from custody after posting $3,000 secured bond.

The other two occupants, also from Virginia, were released at the scene and turned around at the checkpoint.
