Marinia Mae Weeks Upton, age 87, of Firetower Road, Elizabeth City, died peacefully at home, surrounded by her family, on Friday, March 10, 2023. Born in Pasquotank County on June 13, 1935, she was the daughter of the late William Alton Weeks, Sr. and Hazel Marie Gibbs Weeks. Marinia was the widow of William “Billy” Richard Upton, Sr. She was a faithful member of Ramoth Gilead Baptist Church and the Women’s Missionary Union. Marinia was employed many years with Colonial Store, A & P, and ECPPS. She was a devoted wife, mother, and homemaker. Marinia was known for her homemade chicken pot pie, potato salad, pound and coconut cakes. Her family especially enjoyed her fourteen layer chocolate cake and her homemade yeast rolls.
Marinia is survived by her children, Debbie Evans (Freddy), Vickie Langwell (Johnnie), Ricky Upton (Cindy), and Bobby Upton; grandchildren, Renee Braymiller (Brian), Allison Lavin (Sean), Paul Langwell (Caryn), Lauren Langwell (Joey), Nikki Brown (Chris), Brandi Luna (Jose), Tiffani Boyce, Garth Upton (Myra); great grandchildren, Mackenzie, Macie, Jaxon, Cayden, Marlee, Reagan, Amelia, Layla, Everly, Isla, Trey, Libby, Brayden, and Tanner; a sister, Dorothy James (Leo); sisters-in-law, Mary Weeks and Jeanette Onley; brother and sister-in-law, Johnny and Mary Upton. She was predeceased by her sister, Billie Flora; brother, W. A. Weeks, Jr.; and a son-in-law, Jeff Langwell. A special thanks to her sister, Dorothy, for all her loving care to our Momma over the past few years. Also, thanks to Brenda and L. E. White, Albemarle Hospice, Michael and Crystal, her caregivers, Dr. Greg Warren and his wonderful staff.
A funeral service will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 16, 2023, at Ramoth Gilead Baptist Church with Reverend Ken Littleton officiating. Burial will be private. The family will meet after the service in the Family Life Center to greet family and friends and other times at her residence. A visitation will be held at Twiford Memorial Chapel on Wednesday, March 15, 2023, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
