Leslie Rex Henley, Jr.

Leslie Rex Henley, Jr., 55, of Kitty Hawk died peacefully at home with his loving family and friends by his side on Friday, May 28, 2021.

A native Outer Banker, born October 20, 1965, Rex was the loving son of Leslie Rex Henley, Sr. and Betty Lou Henley of Kitty Hawk. He was preceded in death by maternal grandparents Melvin Tillett and Zola Beachum Tillett (Gram) and paternal grandparents Leslie James Henley and Oriental Dell Henley. Also preceded in death, a beloved brother-in-law Nick Ward.

Rex is survived by his devoted wife Diane Midgett; and his most cherished blessing, a daughter Dawn Henley. Also, two stepsons, Alan Guthrie and Adam Finley; and a step-grandson, Elijah Smith, all of whom he loved as his own.

A very close-knit family, Rex was the youngest child of four and is survived by his loving siblings, two protective and nurturing sisters Leslie Henley and Debbie Scarborough (Jimmy Ray) and one brother and best friend David Henley (Sheri). Also, included is a brother-in-law and sister-in-law Macon and Debbie Vaughan, along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

After graduating from Manteo High School, Rex proudly served in the United States Coast Guard where he received his electrical training. Upon his honorable discharge, Rex obtained his electrical license and began a career serving the Outer Banks as one of the most respected and sought-after electricians. He left his thumbprint of expertise starting at the Manns Harbor Shipyard then on to many years of loyal employment for Tommy Twiddy (Ace Mechanical OBX) and always available to anyone and everyone with a need.

Rex was very proud of his deep-rooted Outer Banks heritage. He spent many years fishing, crabbing and surfing her waters. He loved his family and friends and enjoyed gatherings at the “Henley Compound” playing his guitar making music and lasting memories.

Per Rex’s request, the family had a private gathering with a Celebration of Life being scheduled for a later date.
