Large item pick-up scheduled for Tuesday in Buxton, Frisco and Hatteras village

Dare County Public Works will complete large item pick-up for residential customers in Buxton, Frisco, and Hatteras Village on Tuesday, June 2. Materials must be at the curbside no later than 6:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 2. There will not be a second-day pick-up. Please note, no commercial business debris will be picked up. 

Due to COVID-19, County Personnel will not sort piles. Large Item Pick-Up will be conducted by machinery and cannot be sorted.

All material MUST be sorted into 4 SEPARATE PILES, in the right-of-way, in front of your property, at least 30 from a fire hydrant

Debris is to be sorted into the following piles: 

1. Metal and Appliances – please remove refrigerator doors* 2. Furniture, Mattresses and Boxsprings
3. Tires
4. Motor Oil in Spill Proof Containers
**Construction and demolition debris and yard debris will not be picked up. 

The County will collect the following recyclable items: used auto tires, used motor oil (only in spill-proof containers), auto radiators, scrap metals (rims, motor parts), appliances, furniture, mattresses, and box springs. 

The following items will not be collected: old clothes, shoes, cardboard, etc., tree limbs, stumps, leaves, any yard-clearing debris, construction/demolition materials such as lumber, toilets, windows, doors, etc., any hazardous materials (oil-based paint, pesticides, etc.). Water-based paint can be picked up but must be dried out. All normal household garbage must be disposed of in your regular trash can. If an unacceptable item or unsorted pile remains on the roadside following pick-up, that indicates that it has been rejected and must be disposed of at the owner’s expense. These items may be brought to Buxton Transfer Station, Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m., and Saturday 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m, or the Dare County C&D Landfill Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. The first 500 lbs for residential customers is free. Please do not interfere with county employees picking up large items. Be mindful of overhead power lines and place items carefully so County trucks will not be in danger of coming in contact with them.
