Kitty Hawk police continue investigating weekend pursuit and crash on U.S. 158

Police are still investigating a chase that led to a crash at a hardware store on U.S. 158 over the weekend in Kitty Hawk.

Officers with the Kitty Hawk Police Department attempted to stop a vehicle traveling northbound on the bypass on Saturday at 8:49 p.m., according to Chief Joel Johnson.

The vehicle turned around in the mile post 3.5 area and started heading southbound on North Croatan Highway with officers in pursuit.

The vehicle struck a SUV from behind, causing extensive damage and the occupants suffered minor injuries. The pursued vehicle then left the roadway and collided with an unoccupied box truck parked at Ace Hardware.

The man driving the vehicle that caused the wrecks was initially transported to The Outer Banks Hospital and then flown to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, where he remained under treatment.

Johnson said Tuesday that more information about the crash, including the identity of the driver, will be announced soon.
