Juan Luis Barreto

We are heartbroken to announce the death of our father, Juan Luis Barreto. He passed away Tuesday, December 13, 2022, peacefully at his home at the age of 93.

He was born and raised in Lima, Peru. In 1995, after retiring from his job at The Continental bank in Peru, he moved to the US with his family. He then began working as a landscaper, a job he was incredibly passionate about. Juan opted to retire from landscaping for a more rewarding job, helping care for his granddaughters whom he loved dearly. “Papa” was so many things to his granddaughters, the best babysitter, their personal Uber, emergency ATM but the most important of all was simply his presence.

“Cuñado”, “Papa”, or “Tio Juancito” were some of the names he was known by family and friends. He leaves behind his wife Norma Barreto, daughters Giovanna Calvillo (Luis), Cynthia Crabtree (Chad), grandchildren Luis Calvillo, Jr., Catherine Crabtree, Ciara Crabtree, Amariah Calvillo, sister Mercedes Barreto and a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family.

Juan was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and granddaughter Christine Crabtree.

Juan suffered a stroke in 2017 that left him unable to walk. He then began receiving services from DSS and in the last months from Amedisys Hospice.

Despite being unable to speak English Juan formed close relationships with all his caregivers. His gentle nature shone through and allowed him to connect with any and everyone. Both of these agencies provided excellent, compassionate care and we are deeply grateful for everything they did for him.

Juan’s sister-in-law Noelia Zafra took absolutely wonderful care of him! When his wife was no longer able to care for him because of her own health issues, Noelia didn’t think twice about jumping in to help. There are no words to express how profound our gratitude is for all that she did for Juan.

Juan was a dedicated family man, who was always there when you needed him. He will be sadly missed and will always hold a place in our hearts.

His life might have ended, but the legacy of his wisdom, integrity and courage will go on forever.

His decency, sincerity and kind soul will stay with us forever. We are so very blessed to have known and love him. He was a great and noble man, and the best father.

A celebration of Juan’s life will be held at 2:00 pm on Thursday, January 5, 2023, at Twiford Colony Chapel, Manteo. In lieu of flowers, please perform a random act of kindness.
