Johnny Burgess Hooper II, affectionately known as Bul Hooper, a native of Salvo, NC, was dearly loved for 53 years by his family, friends, and all who met him. His compassion for Hatteras Island and love for his heritage and family extends to the life he enjoyed and the pleasures he found in the simple way of living and loving others.
As a boy, Bul was always found outside and on the water fishing, crabbing, surfing, and hunting with his daddy and granddaddy who passed down many skills and passions, which Bul shared with his children. Even as a toddler, he was happiest with a fishing pole and hammer in his hand, walking barefoot in the sand.
During his formative years, Bul served his community well as an avid member of the local boy scout troop #176 and as a volunteer firefighter with the Salvo Fire Department, Station 48. Upon graduating from Cape Hatteras High School, Bul became a profound commercial fisherman and master builder who took great pride in his detailed trim work throughout the Outer Banks. But his greatest accomplishment was loving and raising his children on the island he treasured.
Bul was a proud father, son, brother, uncle, and dear friend to anyone he met. He was a good-natured, kind man with a big smile, loud laugh, and calming presence who will be profoundly missed by all who knew him. Predeceased by his daddy, Johnny Burgess Hooper. Bul is survived by his children, Christopher, Matthew, and Ciera Hooper, his mama, Linda Torge Hooper, and two sisters, Sandy (Hal) Moore and Tiffany (Brandon) Wyche, ex-wife Angel Lynn Hooper, and friend and partner, Shannon Cahoon.
A memorial service and celebration of life will be held at 11 AM on Thursday, December 15, 2022, at Lifeboat Community Church. Donations may be sent to the family to assist with expenses.
