John Nelson Butler

John Nelson Butler, of Stumpy Point, NC, a loving father, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on March 23, 2023, at Beth Sholom Village in Virginia Beach, VA. Born on April 18, 1947, in Portsmouth, VA, John was the son of the late Nelson Ward Butler and Clara Marie Smith Butler.

A proud member of the class of 1965, John graduated from Deep Creek High School in Chesapeake, VA. He went on to serve his country as a veteran of the United States Navy. After his service, John worked as an iron worker, demonstrating his extraordinary work ethic and dedication to his craft. Eventually, he transitioned to owning a general store, where he became a beloved fixture in his community.

John was an incredibly talented artist, focusing primarily on painting. His artwork was not only a testament to his skill but also a reflection of his kind and gentle soul. He had an innate ability to capture the beauty of the world around him, and his paintings brought joy to all who had the privilege of viewing them.

John was predeceased by his mother, Clara Marie Smith Butler, and his father, Nelson Ward Butler. He is survived by his loving daughter, Dawn M. Joyner of Raleigh, NC; his devoted sons, Jimmy Butler of Norfolk, VA, and Nelson West Nichols of Kill Devil Hills, NC; and his caring brother, William Ernest Butler of Middleburg, FL. John’s family was his pride and joy, and he cherished the time he spent with them. His memory will live on in their hearts and the hearts of all who knew him.

A celebration of John’s life will be held at a later date, providing an opportunity for family and friends to come together and remember the incredible man he was. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in John’s name to a charity of your choice. John’s legacy of love, kindness, and generosity will continue to inspire all who knew him, and he will be forever remembered as a true beacon of light in this world.
