Jerry Thomas “Tommy” Dowdy, 76, of Powells Point passed away peacefully at home in the early morning hours of Saturday, June 5, 2021. He was the son of the late Norris and Elsie Dowdy, born in Currituck, NC on October 7, 1944.
He leaves behind his wife of fifty-six years, Charlene Younts Dowdy; daughters, Sonya C. Dowdy and Tonya Dowdy Doxey (Marvin); grandchildren, Dakota Doxey (Olivia), Charla Doxey, Riley Dowdy-Greene and Andrew Dowdy-Greene; and, great grandson, Easton Huff. Also left to cherish his memory are his siblings, William “Bud” Dowdy, Sam Dowdy, Mary Lee Waterfield, Jeanette Pitt and their families. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Richard and James “Jake” Dowdy; and a sister, Louise Gray.
Tommy was a civil service employee, retiring after thirty-three years of outstanding Government service at Space and Naval Warfare Center (SPAWAR). He was a 32nd Degree Mason and a dedicated member of the local Currituck Masonic Lodge #463 AF & AM; a member of Sudan Shriners; Knights Templar; Scottish Rite; Elizabeth City York Rite; and, also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star #218 OES. Tommy also served on the Grand Lodge of North Carolina. He was a life-time member of Powells Point Baptist Church and a dedicated supporter of the Currituck County Democratic Party.
More than anything else, he was a dedicated family man and prided himself on his involvement with his children, grandchildren, and great grandson, and will be greatly missed.
A graveside memorial service with Masonic Rites will be conducted Tuesday, June 8, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. at Powells Point Baptist Church with Chris East officiating. Twiford Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, NC is serving the Dowdy family.
